Byron Community Markets, held on the 1st Sunday of the month, are a fanfare of colour, music, original arts & crafts, as well as a myriad of exotic foods & other wares. Ingenious art and craft work fill the market site. Beautiful things made by local people using unusual and natural materials sit side by side with colourful imports from Africa and Asia. Within the diversity of over 300 stalls there is something for everyone.
Alongside our regular monthly markets special Xmas and Summer Markest are held on Sunday 18 December, 2011 & Sunday 15 January 2012
Open from 8 - 3pm preference is given to local stallholders who make or grow their produce allowing the market to play a valuable role as a business incubator. Throughout the market site over 70% of stalls are filled with the 100% locally made creative delights.
Each month two local charities are invited to be Charity of the Day to collect donations at the entrances to the market. This is a major fundraising boost for many local organisations.
There are initiatives in place to ensure waste minimisation and maximum recycling. The market recycles all plastics, glass, aluminium and compostable waste. To comply with relevant health regulations, animals are not permitted on the market grounds.
The Byron Community Centre has been working to improve/beautify the Butler Street Reserve where both the Byron Market and Byron Farmers Market are held. June 2010 begun the implementation phase with the planting of 40 new medium to large native trees on the market ground.
Over the summer of 2010/11 a trial of extra markets on the third Sunday ran. These proved successful and we are negotiating with council to get permission to make these a permanent feature of the Byron Markets.
